Hassan Nasrallah

The most consequential Arab political-military leader of his generation, Nasrallah built Hezbollah from a small militia into a state-within-a-state with over 150,000 rockets and a political party governing Lebanon. His killing in September 2024 removed Hezbollah's most capable strategic mind and accelerated the Lebanon ceasefire.

Hassan Nasrallah was born on August 31, 1960, in Bourj Hammoud, Beirut. He joined Amal, then defected to found Hezbollah under Iranian guidance in 1982. He became Secretary-General in 1992 after his predecessor was assassinated by Israel. He oversaw Israel's 2000 withdrawal from Lebanon, the 2006 war, and Hezbollah's transformation into one of the region's most powerful non-state military forces. He was killed by an Israeli airstrike on Hezbollah's Beirut headquarters on September 27, 2024.
