EU AI Office

The EU's dedicated AI regulatory body, established in February 2024 to oversee the implementation of the EU AI Act. It is the first dedicated AI regulator in the world with legal enforcement powers over general-purpose AI models.

The EU AI Office was established within the European Commission as the primary oversight body for the AI Act. It is specifically responsible for regulating general-purpose AI (GPAI) models — including large language models like GPT-4 — which were added to the AI Act late in negotiations. The Office conducts model evaluations, issues guidance, and can impose fines of up to €35 million or 7% of global turnover.
